Every engineering aspirant aspires for admission to the top IITs in India. IITs, Indian Institutes of Technology, holds a prestigious spot among the engineering institutes in the country. They are regarded as the top institutes. The first IIT was set up in Kharagpur in 1951 followed by IIT Bombay and then IIT Madras. As the 2019 statistics, there are a total of 23 IITs in India. These institutes offer a total of 11,279 engineering seats (UG level). IITs are set up as autonomous engineering institutes governed by the rules and regulations of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
The National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) releases rankings for top engineering colleges every year. The rankings are also released for medical, management, law, architecture, and pharmacy colleges. In the article ahead we are proving the list of top IITs in India as per the NIRF 2019 rankings (latest). You can consider the list for 2020 engineering admissions.

IIT Ropar and IIT Jodhpur hold the 29th and 50th ranks respectively in the NIRF rankings.
Admission to IITs is done through the JEE Advanced exam. And, only those who qualify the JEE Main are eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam. Top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers are eligible for appearing for the JEE Advanced exam. JEE Advanced 2020 exam is scheduled to be conducted on 17th May 2020.
For candidates who clear the JEE Advanced exam, the seat allocation process is done through JoSAA counselling. Candidates need to register for the counselling process. Seven rounds of counselling are conducted for JEE Advanced counselling. The counselling schedule is released at the official website of the exam conducting authority. Do remember that the exam is conducted by seven zonal IITs on a rotational basis. The 2020 JEE Advanced exam will be conducted by IIT Delhi.
Eligibility for JEE Advanced
Qualifying JEE Main Exam
The first requirement for the appearing in the JEE Advanced exam is qualifying the JEE Main and coming in the top 2,50,000 qualifiers. Category-wise division in the top 2,50,000 is as under:
- General – 4%
- OBC – 27%
- SC – 15%
- ST – 7.5%
- Open – 46.5%
As the Supreme Court had ordered that candidates who are 25 years and older will also be eligible for the exam. There might not be any age limit. You must check the official notification once released.
Number of Attempts
Two times in two consecutive years.
10+2 level of education with a minimum of 75% marks (65% for SC/ST/PwD) in the 12th standard. Candidates must have passed the qualifying examination from a recognised board. Those who will be appearing in the exam in 2020 will also be eligible for JEE Advanced.
Those who have got admission in any of the IITs earlier (irrespective of whether they have continued the programme or not) will not be eligible for admission. However, those students who have joined a preparatory course in any of the IITs for the first time in 2019 will be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam.
There are some specific eligibility criteria for certain courses viz. Mining engineering, petroleum engineering, M.Sc. in Geophysics, etc. Candidates must check the information bulletin to read such eligibility conditions.
